As part of National Apprenticeship week in February we held an Open Day in conjunction with CITB-ConstructionSkills, the Sector Skills Council and Industry Training Board for the construction industry. Students from across North Yorkshire were given a taster of life in the construction industry.
Pupils from Mowbray School in Bedale, Harrogate High School and Thirsk School and Sixth Form College as well as ex-servicemen from Catterick Garrison were invited to our workshops at Thorp Perrow for the event. We gave students the chance to have a go at some traditional heritage crafts such as stone dressing, carving, traditional blacksmiths art, green timber framing and slate roofing. They were also given the opportunity to ask questions and learn more about the diverse range of careers and apprenticeships available in the construction industry.
This event aimed to inspire students to consider careers in construction and demonstrate how enjoyable the heritage trades are. We were really pleased with the success of the event.
Heritage Crafts Experience (Have A Go Day!)
The objective of the day is to introduce students to methods and materials which have traditionally been used to build our homes and structures for centuries.
Our Heritage Crafts Experience covers areas of the curriculum including History, Design & Technology and Vocational Occupations.
We can tailor the delivery covering different periods such as; Viking, Saxon and Tudor ages focussing on the skills needed at those times.Or we can manage the delivery to suit the specific needs of your school.
